Four-day maintenance to cut generation by 935MW, NISO warns
Nigeria is set to face a significant drop in electricity generation due to scheduled maintenance on a major gas facility, which is expected to reduce power generation by nearly 935 megawatts.
Nigeria's electricity supply is anticipated to decline over the next four days due to scheduled maintenance on a major gas facility, which will lower power generation by 934.96 megawatts. This reduction, amounting to a 19.67 percent drop from the current generation capacity of 4,753.1 megawatts, raises concerns over potential load shedding across the country. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) announced this information in a statement, highlighting the implications for power supply nationwide.
The maintenance is planned from February 12 to February 15, 2026, and is expected to impede gas supply to significant thermal power plants, subsequently impacting electricity generation on the national grid. With the NISO's warning, electricity market participants and consumers are advised to prepare for the anticipated shortfall in power. The announcement underscores the dependency of Nigeria’s electricity generation on stable gas supply and the vulnerability of the system to maintenance activities.
As the country grapples with its energy challenges, this four-day maintenance period could exacerbate existing issues related to load shedding and intermittent power supply. Stakeholders are urged to consider potential load management measures to mitigate the impact on households and businesses during this critical period, highlighting the ongoing infrastructure and operational challenges faced by the Nigerian power sector.
