[Exclusive] Coupang in the U.S. Demands 'Online Observation by U.S. Lawyer' Amid Korean Government Investigation

Coupang has raised controversy by demanding that a U.S. attorney observe the investigation process by Korean authorities into alleged massive personal data leaks and other violations.

Coupang, which is undergoing government scrutiny due to astronomical numbers of personal data leaks, has reportedly requested that a U.S. attorney hired by its U.S. corporation, Coupang Inc., observe the investigation process. The company claims the purpose is for a "U.S. congressional report," but critics argue that the request lacks legal grounds and suggests an intention to exert pressure on the Korean government investigation. The Ministry of Employment and Labor has been conducting inspections against Coupang and its subsidiaries for issues including illegal dispatch, a program to expel low-performing employees, and management of blacklists, and has rejected Coupang's request for observational participation via Zoom during the investigation.
