A pharmacy pays its employees for chatting during work hours
A Swedish pharmacy chain compensates employees for socializing with friends at work, aiming to improve well-being and reduce loneliness.
Apotek Hjartat, Sweden's largest private pharmacy chain, has introduced a unique program where employees are compensated for socializing during work hours. Employees earn 1,000 Swedish Krona (approximately $112) annually specifically for interacting with friends while on the job, alongside an additional annual allowance for optional activities. This initiative allows pharmacists to reserve 15 minutes per week or an hour per month solely for socializing, emphasizing the importance of interpersonal connections in the workplace.
The program was inspired by a prior initiative that focused on helping employees recognize loneliness in elderly customers who lingered at the counter seeking conversation. Monica Magnusson, the CEO of Apotek Hjartat, noted that if loneliness is a significant issue for customers, it likely affects employees as well. By fostering a supportive work environment where social interaction is encouraged and financially supported, the company aims to uplift employee morale and well-being.
Feedback from employees has been positive, with many reporting increased happiness as a result of the initiative. This innovative approach is garnering attention, with other Nordic companies, such as IKEA, expressing interest in adopting similar strategies. This trend highlights a growing recognition of the role that socialization and mental health play in workplace productivity and employee satisfaction.
