Populus: the hotel by Studio Gang that fuses architecture and nature in Denver

Studio Gang has completed Populus, a 265-room hotel in Denver that integrates design inspired by the native aspen trees of the area.

Studio Gang, an international architecture and urban design firm led by Jeanne Gang, has recently completed the Populus hotel in Denver, a significant project that features 265 rooms and aims to reflect the growth processes of the area's native aspen trees (Populus tremuloides). The design seeks to blend urban character with ecological richness, and Jeanne Gang, the founding partner, emphasizes that the building is intended to help define the profile of this growing city. The hotel is strategically located at an iconic corner, connecting civic, artistic, and commercial districts in Denver. Its sculptural façade showcases undulations that correspond to the width of the hotel rooms, constructed with fiberglass-reinforced concrete panels. The building design is environmentally conscious, incorporating ash into the concrete to reduce the reliance on cement, emphasizing sustainability in modern architecture. Prominent views are a feature of the hotel, with windows designed to echo the geometric patterns found in the bark of aspen trees. These windows vary in size and shape, responding dynamically to the public spaces surrounding the hotel, creating a unique interaction between the building's architecture and the vibrant urban landscape. This project not only enhances the aesthetic of Denver but also highlights the importance of integrating nature and sustainable practices into urban environments.
