The Hämeenlinna Art Museum in Finland will celebrate its 75th anniversary with special exhibitions, including works from renowned artists Marjukka Vainio and Eija-Liisa Ahtila.
The Hämeenlinna Art Museum, located in Finland, is gearing up to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2026, commencing with exhibitions in December 2026 featuring two notable artists. One of the highlights will be a comprehensive exhibition by Marjukka Vainio, who has had significant ties to Hämeenlinna, showcasing nearly two hundred of her works, thanks in part to valuable donations from her estate. Additionally, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, an internationally recognized contemporary artist known for her pioneering work in video art, will present her new piece entitled 'April,' filmed at Aulanko, making its debut in Finland at the museum.
A major focus of the anniversary programming will be the exhibition 'Save the Art! The Journey from Viipuri to Hämeenlinna,' scripted by art historian Anna Kortelainen. This exhibition will illuminate the crucial history of art preservation amid conflict and war, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage by spotlighting the roles played by individuals and communities in protecting art. Through this narrative, the museum aims to reflect on the broader implications of preserving art and culture throughout history, especially during turbulent times.
Museum director Jenni Rumpunen has expressed excitement about the upcoming celebrations, highlighting how the anniversary will not only showcase the museum's rich history and significant contributions to the art community but also engage the public in meaningful discussions about the historical and ongoing importance of preserving artistic expressions. The planned exhibitions and events are set to draw attention to the local heritage of Hämeenlinna while also connecting it to wider cultural dialogues.
