Nearly 10 thousand euros embezzled from a hotel will send a Vilnius resident to prison

A Vilnius resident has been sentenced to prison for embezzling nearly 10,000 euros from a hotel by gaining the staff's trust.

A recent ruling by the appellate court nullified a previous decision from the Vilnius District Court concerning V. B., who was sentenced to one year in prison for committing fraud. The initial ruling had suspended the execution of his prison sentence for 1 year and 6 months without intensive supervision. The court's decision to increase the punishment followed a case wherein V. B. deceived a hotel employee in Vilnius during a summer night in 2025, claiming he needed to conduct a cash pickup.

By manipulating the staff’s trust, V. B. managed to obtain 9,720 euros in cash from the hotel employee, which he then absconded with. The incident led to criminal charges against him under Article 182, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Lithuania for fraud. Despite the initial leniency shown by the district court, the Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office contested this decision. The chief prosecutor filed an appeal demanding that the court impose a real prison sentence, citing V. B.'s previous two convictions for similar offenses as a reason for the harsher penalty.

The appellate court’s decision to uphold a stricter punishment highlights the judiciary's response to repeated offenses and reinforces the approach towards fraud cases. This ruling may serve as a warning to potential offenders, illustrating that the legal system is willing to impose actual prison sentences, especially for those who have a history of fraudulent activities.
