Shipping: Seeking a Common Line on Scrubbers

The international shipping industry is looking for a unified approach regarding open-loop scrubbers, amid environmental concerns.

The international shipping community is currently working towards establishing a common line with respect to open-loop scrubbers, which are being utilized by numerous vessels to protect the environment. Denmark, as part of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is leading a group of countries advocating for stricter regulations on open-loop scrubbers, supported by environmental organizations calling for tougher protections for marine ecosystems. On the other hand, the shipping industry contends that significant investments have already been made into these systems over the past decade in accordance with IMO regulations. Industry representatives argue that the developments made have complied with existing rules, and any adjustments now could undermine the financial commitments of shipping companies made with the expectation of current standards. Moreover, environmental activists have specifically criticized open-loop scrubbers for discharging the water used to clean sulfur dioxide back into the sea. However, maritime sources emphasize that so far, there is no scientific evidence demonstrating that these systems have had a detrimental impact on the marine environment, suggesting that more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions on their environmental footprints.
