Støre calls for support for revised defense plan

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway is seeking support from Parliament for adjustments to the long-term defense plan due to various challenges including inflation.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the necessity to adjust the long-term defense plan during his security policy briefing to the Storting (Parliament). He noted that while the government is ahead of schedule in terms of new personnel, rising prices are hampering new acquisitions, leading to the need for significant revisions in the plan. Støre highlighted that the country is receiving less military equipment for its budget due to inflation and extended lead times for procurement.

Moreover, Støre pointed out the rapid and extensive technological developments in defense, particularly with drones, which necessitate an update in defense strategies. He reiterated that NATO's increased demands on member countries add further pressure to modernize and adapt the defense framework. These evolving challenges further underline the urgency for a reassessment of Norway's long-term defense priorities.

In light of these factors, Støre has called for a broad political agreement in the Storting regarding these necessary alterations to the defense sector's long-term plan. Such a consensus is crucial to navigating the complexities brought forth by economic pressures and evolving security environments, ensuring that Norway remains prepared to meet both current and future defense demands.
