PL’s goal to expand base in the São Paulo Assembly creates friction among party deputies

The PL party’s efforts to expand its parliamentary base in São Paulo are causing tensions among its current deputies who are seeking reelection.

The negotiations by the PL party to expand its base in the São Paulo Legislative Assembly (Alesp) are causing discomfort among its existing members who are preparing for reelection this year. Currently equipped with 19 deputies, the party aims to persuade at least four lawmakers to join by March during the party window, which would enable the PL to control half of the support base for Governor Tarcísio de Freitas in the legislature. The party leadership views this expansion as a strategic move to secure the vice-governorship position for André do Prado, the party's president in the Assembly.

In their attempts to broaden their influence, the PL has been negotiating with several state deputies, including Oseias de Madureira (PSD), Paulo Correa Júnior, Marcelo Aguiar (Podemos), and Eduardo Nóbrega (Podemos). However, these maneuvers have raised concerns among current PL members who are aiming for reelection or considering bids for congressional positions. They fear that bringing in additional party members could lead to overcrowding and disrupt their campaign plans, creating intra-party tensions.

The potential membership of Correa Júnior, a leader within the PSD party, has been particularly contentious, igniting disagreements during a recent party meeting. This reflects the complex dynamics within the PL as it manages the balance between expanding its representation while addressing the concerns of its existing members, which could impact their overall electoral strategy in the upcoming elections.
