Approval of a name for a new street in Kringlureitnum

The Reykjavík City Environment and Planning Council has approved the name Mjóamýri for a new street in the Kringlureit area, which was previously home to the western depressions of the first golf course in Reykjavik.

The Reykjavík City Environment and Planning Council has officially approved a proposal to name a new street, Mjóamýri, in the Kringlureit area. This decision follows the demolition of the old Morgunblaðshús, which is shown in the accompanying photographs. The proposal was presented during a council meeting, highlighting the historical significance of the chosen name, which recalls the western depressions of Reykjavik's first golf course located in Mjóamýri.

The new street will be bordered by Kringlan to the east, Listabraut to the south, and Kringlumýrarbraut to the west. Plans indicate that this street will extend into a later building phase for the area that is currently undergoing major construction. The ongoing work includes the demolition of the old Morgunblaðshús and aims to develop the site into a residential area with approximately 420 apartments anticipated in the first phase of the project.

Construction in this area is expected to take about five to seven years to complete, signaling significant urban development in the region. The approval of the street name not only reflects the local planning and development efforts but also connects the past of the area with its future, preserving a piece of Reykjavik's golfing history while contributing to the urban landscape of the city.
