Claudia Sheinbaum is confident in controlling the measles outbreak in Mexico ahead of the 2026 World Cup

President Claudia Sheinbaum has assured the public that her government will manage the measles outbreak in Mexico through an intensive vaccination campaign.

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the nation regarding the recent measles outbreak, urging citizens to remain calm as her administration ramps up efforts to vaccinate 28 million people ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. She emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing further cases of measles, countering claims that the vaccination efforts under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador have waned.

During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum supported data from the director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, which indicated that previous administrations, particularly those of former presidents Enrique Peña Nieto, Felipe Calderón, Vicente Fox, and Ernesto Zedillo, contributed to the current outbreak due to under-vaccination. The president assured the public of an intensive vaccination campaign, underlining that the majority of the population is already vaccinated, dismissing the narrative that vaccination efforts halted during López Obrador's presidency.

The timing of this outbreak is particularly concerning as it coincides with preparations for the upcoming World Cup, which is expected to bring significant international visitors to Mexico. Therefore, the government’s commitment to vaccinating millions highlights its public health priority and aims to prevent the spread of the disease during this significant global event.
