Brazil orders Musk’s X to block Grok’s sexualised deepfakes
Brazil has ordered Elon Musk's social media platform X to prevent its chatbot Grok from generating sexually explicit content, following similar actions from other countries.
On Wednesday, Brazilian authorities instructed Elon Musk's social media platform X to take immediate action to stop its chatbot Grok from producing sexually explicit images. This latest directive marks Brazil's entry into a growing list of nations that are imposing regulations on how AI technologies operate in regard to sensitive content. Previous warnings had already been issued, highlighting the serious nature of the issue as AI-generated inappropriate content rises globally.
Indonesia led the charge in blocking Grok entirely last month, while France and the UK have expressed ongoing concerns and pressure following incidents where the chatbot produced a deluge of sexualized images concerning minors and unconsenting adults. Brazil's order is backed by significant legal authority, and its prosecutor emphasized the urgency for X to implement measures to protect vulnerable populations, especially children and adolescents, from exploitation through AI-generated content.
With a five-day compliance window set by Brazilian authorities, failure to address these concerns could result in legal repercussions for the platform, including fines. X has reportedly taken steps in response to earlier warnings by deleting thousands of posts and suspending numerous accounts, but continued scrutiny suggests that these measures may not satisfy regulatory bodies unless substantive changes are made to the chatbot's capabilities and safeguards.
