Madagascar: Cyclone Gezani Hits Madagascar, Leaves 31 Dead

Cyclone Gezani has struck Madagascar, resulting in 31 fatalities and widespread devastation in the port city of Toamasina.

Cyclone Gezani has caused significant destruction in Madagascar, leading to the deaths of at least 31 individuals in the port city of Toamasina. The country’s disaster management office reported scenes of 'total chaos' as homes were destroyed and essential infrastructure was severely damaged. With wind speeds reaching up to 250 km/h, the cyclone resulted in roofs being torn off and trees uprooted, plunging entire neighborhoods into darkness.

The military leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, indicated that the extent of the damage has overwhelmed the nation’s capacity to respond effectively. It is estimated that nearly three-quarters of Toamasina has been obliterated. Many residents have suffered injuries, and hundreds have been evacuated to safer locations. Survivors shared that this storm was among the most violent they had ever witnessed, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Cyclone Gezani marks the second cyclone to impact Madagascar in a short period, following the recent tropical cyclone Fytia, which resulted in 14 deaths and the displacement of over 31,000 individuals, as per reports from the UN's humanitarian office. This recurring cyclone activity raises concerns about the country's preparedness and response strategies to natural disasters, as the frequency and intensity of such events appear to be increasing due to climate change.
