Media: 'aušrietis' T. Domarkas questioned in investigation regarding illegally buried hazardous waste
Lithuanian MP T. Domarkas is under investigation for possible environmental damage related to illegal waste disposal linked to his father's property.
The investigation, initiated by the Klaipėda District Prosecutor's Office in September 2025, centers on possible environmental harm caused by hazardous waste buried on land owned by the father of T. Domarkas, a member of the Lithuanian Parliament. Environmentalists estimate that the damage to nature could amount to nearly 4.6 million euros. Fourteen current and former employees of 'Redus.LT,' a company involved in the violations, have been named as suspects in the case, indicating the scale of the alleged environmental breach.
Documents from the LRT Investigative Department suggest that the company, registered at T. Domarkas's father's home in Vieštovėnai, is at the heart of the violations. Furthermore, it has emerged that the MP had prior business ties with 'Redus.LT' before he became a parliament member. This raises ethical concerns regarding his potential conflict of interest, particularly as he had previously faced fines for inadequate handling of waste and mixing it with hazardous materials as a project executor for the company.
The implications of this investigation are significant, not only for T. Domarkas's political career but also for public trust in the parliamentary system, as it highlights the potential for conflicts of interest and the need for greater accountability among public officials regarding environmental issues. Environmental violations such as these can have long-lasting impacts on ecosystems and public health, thus increasing the urgency for rigorous oversight and regulation in the management of hazardous waste.
