Ministry of National Defense Requests Investigation and Disciplinary Measures for Over 180 Military Personnel Involved in Martial Law

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense has identified over 180 military personnel connected to the December 3rd coup attempt and is pursuing investigations and disciplinary actions against them.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense has reported that it is taking legal and administrative actions against over 180 military personnel who were directly or indirectly involved in the coup attempt that occurred on December 3rd. This announcement was made by Defense Minister An Gyu-baek, who highlighted that investigations are being conducted against these individuals, including senior generals and other ranks, to ensure accountability without exceptions. Notably, Army Commander Joo Seong-woon has been removed from his position and is under investigation due to new allegations related to the coup.

In his briefing at the Defense Ministry in Yongsan, An revealed that investigations had been carried out on approximately 860 individuals across the military and various departments, with a focus on illegal martial law practices. Among the actions taken, 48 personnel are being recommended for disciplinary measures, and 75 have received warnings and advice. Furthermore, several high-ranking officers, including brigadier generals and colonels affiliated with military intelligence units, are facing prosecution on serious charges related to the coup, such as abuse of power and relevant tasks related to the uprising.

The Ministry's internal investigation revealed that, even after the martial law was lifted, certain military entities, including the 2nd Rapid Response Division, operated additional available forces, while the military intelligence agency engaged in prior coordination to seize key political figures. This meticulous investigation involved over 120 officials over a six-month period, scrutinizing military actions and communications regarding the preparations for and execution of the coup, leading to a pursuit of thorough accountability for the alleged breaches of law.
