Tsiknopempti with unsettled weather: Strong rains, hail, and stormy winds

Heavy rains and storms, with possible hail, are expected today in parts of Greece, particularly the west, Cyclades, and Crete, with strong winds also forecasted.

Greece is bracing for severe weather on Tsiknopempti, a traditional day when many celebrate with barbecues. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has predicted localized strong rains and storms, especially in the western regions, the Cyclades islands, and Crete, beginning early Thursday and again late in the afternoon into the eastern Aegean until morning. Accompanying these weather conditions will be very strong to stormy southerly winds, adding to the severity of the weather.

In addition to rain, snowfall is anticipated in the central and northern mountainous areas, presenting a stark contrast to the otherwise mild temperatures expected across the country, which will be higher than the seasonal averages by approximately 4 to 5 degrees Celsius. Specifically, temperatures in the north are expected to reach 15 to 16 degrees, while the Ionian Sea and other mainland areas will see highs of 17 to 19 degrees, and the eastern island regions may reach 20 degrees Celsius.

The forecast warns of rapidly changing conditions throughout the day, with particularly intense phenomena likely to disrupt local activities and celebrations associated with Tsiknopempti. Residents and visitors are advised to take precautions as they adjust to the expected strong winds and rain, which could impact travel and outdoor festivities in these regions.
