Ruckus at Hansraj College for the Principal's Son's Wedding, Students Accuse of Campus Misuse

Students at Hansraj College protested against the use of campus facilities for the principal's son's wedding, claiming misuse and restrictions on student access.

A controversy erupted at Hansraj College in Delhi University when the campus was adorned for the wedding of Principal Rama Sharma's son. Students expressed their anger over the extensive decorations, including pink and white tents, alleging that college facilities were being used for a private wedding. Photos circulating on social media showed large parts of the campus transformed for the event, leading to accusations from students that while the college grounds and buildings were being repurposed for the wedding, the hostel had been closed to them under the pretext of it being unsuitable for students.

On Monday, around 200 students, led by the Students' Federation of India (SFI), protested in the college. They highlighted a pattern of restrictions placed on students when it comes to utilizing campus grounds and facilities. Students pointed out the inconsistency in the administration allowing a wedding to commandeer the space late into the night, while they frequently had to vacate the grounds by certain hours with many events requiring permission. They also voiced concerns that the wedding preparations were interfering with the college's annual sports event 'Khelo Hansraj', which further intensified their frustrations.

The incident raises significant questions about the administration’s priorities and their commitment to ensuring equitable access for students. Critics argue that using educational institutions for personal events undermines their primary purpose and can lead to a growing discontent among the student body. This protest reflects broader issues regarding student rights and the management of educational spaces amid increasing privatization in educational institutions across India.
