Enumeration begins for Makoko demolition victims

Stakeholders in Lagos agree to form a committee for self-enumeration of buildings impacted by recent demolitions in Makoko.

In response to the recent demolitions in the Makoko area of Lagos State, community stakeholders from Makoko, Sogunro, and Oko Agbon held a meeting with state government representatives. They established a 10-member committee tasked with conducting a self-enumeration process of the demolished buildings. This initiative is aimed at accurately assessing the impact of the demolitions, and the committee is expected to report its findings to the Lagos State House of Assembly Ad Hoc Committee on Rules and Business within a two-week timeframe.

The stakeholders reached a five-point agreement, which emphasizes the importance of not allowing the displaced residents to rebuild their homes until the enumeration is completed and further government decisions are made. This measure is perhaps to ensure that the upcoming regeneration plans for the Makoko area will be done without causing further displacement of locals, preserving the community's social fabric. This point reflects the community's desire for involvement in the regeneration process, ensuring that the voices of affected citizens are heard and prioritized.

Furthermore, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Geographic Information Service, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, committed to delivering an auto-photo that will delineate the boundaries of the demolitions within a month. This commitment is significant as it would provide clarity regarding the areas affected by the demolitions, which is crucial for both the residents and the authorities moving forward. The overall outcome of this meeting serves to highlight the ongoing struggles faced by communities like Makoko, while reiterating the vital role of stakeholder engagement in addressing the complex challenges related to urban regeneration and development in Lagos State.
