The Kosovo Parliament Finally Elected Albin Kurti as Prime Minister
The Kosovo Parliament has officially elected Albin Kurti as Prime Minister, resolving a year-long political stalemate.
On Wednesday, the Kosovo Parliament took a significant step by electing Albin Kurti as Prime Minister, marking the end of a political impasse that has lasted for over a year. Kurti had been serving as the acting Prime Minister for the past twelve months before his formal election, and this is his third term in the role. The election saw Kurti receive 66 votes in the 120-seat assembly, indicating a solid backing from his supporting coalition.
In his speech prior to the vote, Kurti outlined his political agenda, which focuses on economic development and strengthening the country's defense capabilities. He also emphasized the continued need to normalize relations with neighboring Serbia, which remains a critical issue in Kosovo's foreign policy and regional stability. The political crisis in Kosovo began in February 2025, when Kurti's Vetevendosje party failed to secure a parliamentary majority in elections held at that time, leading to difficulties in forming a new government.
Following early parliamentary elections in December of last year, Vetevendosje managed to regain prominence, carrying the largest number of votes, allowing Kurti to reclaim the Prime Ministership. This election is pivotal for Kosovo as the government seeks to navigate its relationship with Serbia and address pressing economic issues in the country, raising expectations for Kurti's leadership in advancing these critical agendas.
