Blue Macaw Rescued with Suspected Food Poisoning in MT

A blue macaw was rescued in Peixoto de Azevedo, Brazil, after being found disoriented and suspected of food poisoning, likely caused by exposure to agricultural chemicals.

A blue macaw was rescued by the Fire Department in Peixoto de Azevedo, located 692 km from Cuiabá, after the bird was found disoriented and exhibiting signs of food poisoning near silos in the city's industrial sector. The incident occurred on Tuesday (11) during a period of agricultural spraying, which may lead to indirect contamination of food sources in forests, especially near cultivated areas. The firefighters explained that the consumption of contaminated food can cause the accumulation of toxins in the animal, resulting in symptoms such as lethargy and disorientation, which can hinder navigation and lead to collisions with structures like silos.

The blue macaw was safely captured and taken to the Wildlife Rescue Center (Cetas) in the municipality, where it will undergo treatment that includes gastric cleaning, rehydration, and nutritional support, followed by rehabilitation for eventual release into a forested area. The Fire Department emphasized that in cases like this, the public should always assist by reporting such incidents to promote the safety of wildlife. The incident sheds light on the potential dangers posed to local wildlife during agricultural activities, raising awareness about the need for careful monitoring and protective measures to ensure the health of animal populations in those regions.
