Work to Reduce Patient Numbers and Transfer Others
Health Minister Alma Möller expresses concern over the state of the hospital and emphasizes the need to reduce patient numbers by transferring those who have completed treatment to other facilities.
Health Minister Alma Möller has voiced her discomfort regarding the current situation at the hospital, stressing the importance of reducing the number of patients within its walls. She plans to transfer patients who have completed their treatment to other facilities in an effort to alleviate the burden on the hospital. This comes amidst growing concerns about the well-being of hospital staff, who are facing increasing challenges in managing patient loads.
In the coming days, Alma Möller announced that 17 new nursing and day-care spaces will be opened to accommodate patients, with an additional 100 spaces planned to launch in May or June. The steps are part of a broader strategy aimed at improving conditions at the Landspítali hospital and its emergency department. This expansion is seen as critical, given the slow pace of developing nursing spaces in recent years, which has compounded the emergency department’s challenges.
This initiative reflects the government's recognition of the urgent need to enhance healthcare infrastructure in Iceland. As more facilities become available, the aim is to ensure that patients who are ready to transition out of the main hospital can do so safely and efficiently, while also improving working conditions for the medical staff who are currently strained by high patient volumes.
