Galtier, coach of Saudi Neom, changes his position on players fasting during Ramadan
Christophe Galtier, coach of Neom in Saudi Arabia, expresses respect for Ramadan and emphasizes his balanced approach to accommodating players during the holy month.
Christophe Galtier, the French coach of Saudi football club Neom, has declared his full respect for the holy month of Ramadan, emphasizing that he works with his players to achieve a balanced approach during this period. In a recent press conference, he highlighted that this is his third Ramadan spent in a Muslim country, having previously managed in Qatar, and that he is committed to allowing his players ample time to be with their families while respecting the traditions of Ramadan.
Galtier acknowledged the proactive measures taken by the Professional League regarding the scheduling of matches during Ramadan, which allows for flexibility unlike what athletes might experience in Europe. His change of approach comes in the wake of past controversies during his tenure at Nice in France, where he faced accusations of making discriminatory comments regarding Ramadan and attempting to pressure his Muslim players to break their fast during the holy month.
In addressing these past incidents, Galtier clarified that while he shares his views with players, he does not impose anything on them. This statement is part of his larger effort to address any misunderstandings from previous years and demonstrate a respectful approach towards players' cultural and religious practices, aiming to create a supportive environment within the team during Ramadan.
