It consists of two primary components: a helmet adorned with a military scene and a mask that resembles the face of a young man. The combined weight of these parts is 1.3 kilograms. This helmet is one of just three Roman masks found in Britain, underscoring its historical significance. The artwork on the helmet illustrates a clear battle scenario featuring six cavalry and eleven infantrymen. The depiction suggests that despite the smaller number of cavalry, they hold a tactical advantage, as evidenced by the two fallen infantrymen depicted on the helmet.
In addition to the battle scene, the helmet’s decoration includes two palmettes (the patterns resembling palm branches), symbolizing victory, alongside shields and spears that represent captured armor. These features highlight the craftsmanship and artistic intent of the piece. The holes found at the back of the neck area indicate that there were once additional decorations attached to the helmet, suggesting it was a prestigious item possibly used for ceremonial purposes as well.
The mask attached to the helmet portrays a young man with a blank expression and no beard, while his curly hair transitions into four snake heads. This imagery likely alludes to the myth of Medusa, reinforcing the rich narrative and cultural significance embedded in this artifact.
