Ecuador has six of the ten most violent cities in the world, according to a report

Ecuador has six cities ranked among the ten most violent in the world, with Babahoyo in second place, as reported by the Mexican Commission for Human Rights.

According to the 2025 Ranking of the 50 Most Violent Cities in the World, compiled by the Mexican Commission for Human Rights, Ecuador has six cities featured in the top ten list. Babahoyo ranks second globally, while other Ecuadorian cities such as Machala, Quevedo, Manabí Centro, Guayaquil, and Esmeraldas also secure notable positions. Notably, Santo Domingo appears at position 49, demonstrating a concerning trend of violence across these urban areas.

The report reveals that Ecuador is the second country with the highest number of cities in the top ten, totaling six. Babahoyo's alarming position at number two underscores the growing violence that has affected several regions in the country. In general, Ecuador has seven cities represented in the overall ranking of 50, while Mexico leads with 17 cities followed by Colombia with eight.

As the violence crisis continues, these rankings highlight a pressing challenge for Ecuador's governance and security strategies, prompting questions about the underlying causes and potential solutions. Authorities and organizations are likely to respond to these findings by focusing on improving security measures and addressing the roots of violence, while public awareness and international eyes may now scrutinize the government’s handling of the situation more than ever.
