Mantzios on Mitsotakis-Erdoğan meeting: Dialogue must continue, without illusions, with realism and full awareness of Turkey's positions
Dimitris Mantzios emphasizes the importance of continuing dialogue between Greece and Turkey while acknowledging Turkey's revisionist claims and illegal demands.
Dimitris Mantzios, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee for the PASOK-Kinal party, commented on the meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, stating that their declarations confirm prior expectations leading up to the 6th High-Level Cooperation Council in Ankara. He underscored that as long as Turkey maintains its revisionist positions and illegal claims, contrary to international law and rules of the sea, and even threatens Greece with war, the chances for resolving the ongoing dispute over maritime boundary delimitation in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean remain slim.
Mantzios pointed out the provocative actions of Ankara, specifically mentioning the issuance of a long-term NAVTEX in a large area of the Aegean and the repeated references to a 'Turkish minority' despite the Lausanne Treaty. He argued that these actions severely limit any potential rapprochement between Greece and Turkey, confining it to mere crisis management. He stresses the necessity for a realistic dialogue without illusions, recognizing Turkey's positions and actions.
He concluded that a meaningful conversation cannot occur under the present circumstances as Turkey's continued provocative behavior exacerbates the already tense relationships, necessitating a careful approach to managing crises rather than fostering constructive dialogue.
