Sheinbaum states that Trump has not expressed intention to abandon the T-MEC; 'it is very important for them'
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum asserted that Donald Trump has not indicated any intention to leave the USMCA treaty, emphasizing its significance for both nations.
In a recent press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed rumors regarding Donald Trump's potential withdrawal from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), also known as T-MEC in Spanish. She firmly stated that Trump has not communicated any desire to abandon the treaty, which he signed during his first term. The comments come in response to reports from U.S. media suggesting that Trump privately considered this option and questioned his advisors about the reasons he shouldn't leave the agreement.
Sheinbaum emphasized her belief that Trump would not step away from the USMCA, citing the treaty's critical importance to both countries. She remarked, "We do not believe that he will manifest this intention, as it has never come up in conversations, and it is very important for them and for us." Her comments highlight a confidence in the ongoing relevance of the agreement, despite the uncertainty surrounding U.S. domestic politics and Trump's previous stance on trade.
Additionally, in light of the treaty's review process, Sheinbaum announced that the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, will address the matter further in an upcoming press conference known as "La MaΓ±anera del Pueblo." This will provide more clarity on the current status and future directions of the trade agreement, reinforcing Mexico's commitment to the USMCA amidst fluctuating U.S. political rhetoric.
