You can now earn money with wolf droppings
The Finnish Hunters' Association is rewarding its member clubs for DNA samples collected from wolf feces in order to improve wolf population estimates.
The Finnish Hunters' Association has initiated a unique program where member clubs can earn money by collecting DNA samples from wolf feces. For every sample collected from a wolf or male wolf, hunters can earn 50 euros, and if the sample originates from a new wolf territory not accounted for in the prior assessments, the reward increases to 100 euros. This initiative aims to enhance the accuracy and geographical coverage of wolf population evaluations in Finland.
As the organization emphasizes the importance of comprehensive data for sustainable population management, they highlight the necessity for continued controlled hunting of wolves under current Finnish law. According to Jaakko Silpola, the Executive Director of the Finnish Hunters' Association, monitoring the wolf population is critical to ensure that management hunting can continue in future years. The established minimum population reference for a favorable conservation level is 273 wolves, and maintaining an accurate estimation is essential for the species’ conservation efforts.
Currently, the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) has reported that they have successfully retrieved 871 DNA samples through this initiative, showcasing a collaborative effort between hunters and conservationists to ensure that the wolf population is adequately managed. This effort could potentially lead to more effective wildlife management strategies and help balance ecological concerns with the interests of local communities.
