In May 2024, the body of Lima Khan was discovered by a fisherman near a shelter in Lessebo, Småland, Sweden. She had previously been strangled in a car by her brother, who also confessed to setting her body on fire. Both the 23-year-old brother and their father, Azizu Rahman Azizi, were later sentenced to 16 years and life imprisonment respectively, while their mother was acquitted in both trial and appellate court. Just six months prior to her murder, in December 2023, Lima Khan had fled from her family to northern Sweden, where she reported to two police officers and social services that her father had raped her. Despite her testimony, the police did not file a report regarding the allegations, violating their obligation to do so under the law. An investigation was subsequently initiated against the officers for their failure to act on Lima's disclosure of abuse. The recent acquittal of the police has raised significant concerns about law enforcement's responsibilities in protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly when allegations of serious crimes like sexual assault are involved. The case highlights the need for reforms within the police service to ensure that such serious allegations are prioritized and handled in accordance with legal mandates, potentially preventing future tragedies like that of Lima Khan.
