The 3rd of May this year marks the 400th anniversary of the Jesuit Missions that were established in what is now Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In recognition of this significant historical milestone, the state government, local municipalities, social organizations, and private enterprises have joined forces to orchestrate a series of cultural events, many of which will be held directly at the ruins of the missions themselves. These events are intended to not only celebrate the legacy of the Jesuit presence but also to engage the local community and visitors in the rich cultural heritage of the area.

The planned programming includes a variety of festive activities, such as a special edition of the "Canto Missioneiro" music festival in the city of Santo Ângelo, a film showcase in Porto Alegre, and a photography contest aimed at both professional and amateur photographers. The photography contest, named "Olhares Sobre as Missões," is free to enter, with registrations closing on Sunday the 15th. Participants are encouraged to submit their photographs at the time of registration for a chance to win cash prizes, which reach up to R$ 6,000 for professionals and R$ 3,000 for amateurs, thereby promoting artistic expression while highlighting the historical significance of these sites.

Additionally, the organizing committee has announced plans for infrastructure improvements and the construction of museums in towns such as Entre-Ijuís and São Luiz Gonzaga. These developments aim to enhance the cultural landscape of the region and provide educational opportunities regarding the Jesuit Missions, solidifying their place in the historical narrative of Brazil while fostering tourism and local pride in their unique cultural heritage.
