Russia threatens to attack Greenland if it militarizes: 'We will take technical-military countermeasures'
Russia warns of technical-military responses if Greenland is militarized against its interests, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
On February 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a stern warning regarding the potential militarization of Greenland. He stated that Russia would adopt appropriate technical-military countermeasures should military capabilities aimed at Russia be established on Greenland. This assertion was made during a speech to the Russian Parliament, highlighting Moscow's vigilant stance against any perceived threats in its near abroad.
Lavrov emphasized that the situation concerning Greenland should primarily be resolved by the United States, Denmark, and Greenland itself, stressing that it is not directly Russia's concern. The Foreign Minister criticized the Danish government for its treatment of Greenland's residents over the years, suggesting that the voices of the local populace must be considered in any decisions regarding military presence. His comments reflect a broader geopolitical context where Arctic regions are becoming points of international contention.
The call for the Arctic to remain a zone of peace and collaboration underscores Russia's desire to maintain stability in the region amidst increased military activities from NATO and their allies. This statement also indicates Russia's commitment to safeguard its national security interests while navigating the complexities of international relations and territorial sovereignty in the Arctic.
