A crashed BMW and 36 memorial candles brought to central Helsinki – a grim reason
Traffic safety campaigns in Finland highlight the tragic deaths of young people in accidents, urging legislative reform and awareness of alcohol's impact.
In a poignant display in central Helsinki, Traffic Safety Finland (Liikenneturva) brought a crashed BMW alongside 36 memorial candles to honor young individuals aged 15 to 24 who lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2024. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the alarming number of traffic fatalities among young people and the contributing factors such as speeding, alcohol use, and the dangers of multiple young passengers in one vehicle.
Liikenneturva's CEO, Pasi Anteroinen, emphasized the need for legislative change, as the Finnish Parliament is set to review a proposed amendment to the driving license laws that would prohibit 17-year-olds from driving during nighttime hours, specifically from midnight to 5 AM. This measure is part of broader suggestions by Traffic Safety Finland, including implementing stricter penalties for alcohol consumption among young drivers and lowering the permissible blood alcohol content limit.
The initiative, which placed a stark visual reminder of the realities of youth traffic deaths in a public square, aims not only to memorialize the victims but to spark crucial conversations about road safety and responsibility among young drivers. Anteroinen's call to action highlights the urgent need for societal and legislative changes to prevent further tragedies and address the issues surrounding youth driving behaviors.
