Ukraine Advances in Zaporizhzhia After Russian Troops Lose Starlink Access – NATO Official
A NATO official reported that Ukraine is making gains in Zaporizhzhia due to Russian troops losing access to Starlink, which they were using for battlefield coordination.
In a recent briefing, a senior NATO official highlighted the significant impact of Russian troops losing access to Starlink on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This development has allowed Ukrainian forces to reclaim ground in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. The loss of Starlink, a satellite internet system operated by SpaceX, has disrupted Russian command and control capabilities, hampering their battlefield operations. Previously, Russian units were using Starlink to coordinate actions and manage drone operations effectively.
The decision to cut off Starlink access was made after Ukraine requested SpaceX to disable terminals near the front lines. The elimination of this crucial communication link has placed Russian forces in a challenging position regarding their command structure. The NATO official expressed confidence that any alternative communications system developed by Russia would likely be less effective than the Starlink network, further complicating their military response.
Compounding these challenges, Moscow's ambitions to create a domestically produced network of low-orbit satellites to replace Starlink have encountered significant delays. This creates a precarious situation for Russian troops at a critical juncture in the conflict, as they struggle to maintain operational integrity without the reliable communication technologies that Starlink provided.
