Shark Monitoring in Pernambuco Has Been Stopped for More Than a Decade

Shark monitoring along the coast of Pernambuco, Brazil, has been halted for over a decade, leading to recent incidents involving shark attacks.

Shark monitoring on the coast of Recife and the greater metropolitan area of Pernambuco has been absent for over ten years, with the last activities conducted in 2015. In the past month alone, there have been two notable incidents involving sharks: a tourist was bitten on the leg by a nurse shark in Fernando de Noronha, suffering non-life-threatening injuries, and a 13-year-old boy tragically died after being bitten by a hammerhead shark at Del Chifre beach in Olinda, part of the greater Recife area. The boy's injuries were severe, and it has been established that the shark involved was likely between 3 and 3.5 meters long, consistent with adult specimens of the species.
