Ghana: 12.5 Million Ghanaians Food Insecure - GSS Report
According to a report from the Ghana Statistical Service, 12.5 million Ghanaians were food insecure as of the third quarter of 2025, although the overall incidence of food insecurity has slightly improved from the previous quarter.
The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has reported that 12.5 million Ghanaians were food insecure as of the third quarter of 2025, showing a concerning trend in food availability despite slight improvements in overall percentages. The report notes that food insecurity increased from 11.2 million in Q1 2024, to 12.4 million in Q2 2025, before reaching 12.5 million in Q3 2025. Interestingly, the incidence of food insecurity has declined from 41.1% in Q2 2025 to 38.1% in Q3 2025, indicating that while more people are food insecure, a smaller percentage of the total population are experiencing food-related challenges compared to the prior quarter. Severe food insecurity also saw a decrease, dropping from 5.1% to 4.1% during the same period.
Dr. Alhasan Iddrisu, the Government Statistician, emphasized that food insecurity is not just an economic or social concern, but a multifaceted issue that impacts various aspects including household welfare, child health, labor productivity, business confidence, and overall national development. This report underlines the importance of addressing food insecurity as part of Ghana's National Development Agenda and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 2, which aims to end hunger and ensure food security for all citizens. The ongoing challenges highlight the need for sustained efforts and policies aimed at improving food distribution and accessibility in the country.
The figures presented by the GSS are critical for policymakers and social programs in Ghana, as they reflect the realities faced by millions of families. As the report continues to show high numbers of food insecurity, it necessitates an urgent response from both government and non-governmental entities to tackle the underlying causes and implement effective measures to enhance food security across the nation. Long-term strategies will be vital in addressing these pressing issues related to food availability and accessibility, which are essential for the country's socio-economic stability and growth.
