KUKU β© Elmar Vaher: Feeding a soldier for six to seven euros a day is a challenge
Elmar Vaher, leader of Estonia's Defence Investment Centre, discusses the ambitious needs for national defence and challenges in military resource allocation during a recent interview.
Elmar Vaher, who has been at the helm of the Defence Investment Centre for nearly a month, shared insights on the ambitious list of national defence needs in an interview on Kuku's show 'Sihik'. He emphasized that while there are challenges, they are achievable and underlined the excitement of his new role as he learns about the organization. Vaher expressed that he is taking time to understand his colleagues and has already made initial personnel decisions, including hiring a human resources manager.
With over two billion euros allocated for developing defence capabilities this year, Vaher stressed the importance of strategic spending. He mentioned that he does not believe in purchasing everything available on the market, as it wouldn't be sensible for Estonia's economy. While there is a significant amount of focus on acquiring expensive, internationally demanded weaponry, he assured that the budget also allocates funds for other essential needs of the Defence Investment Centre.
Overall, Vaherβs remarks reflect the critical considerations in modernizing Estoniaβs military forces while balancing economic rationality. His leadership will be crucial as Estonia navigates its national security priorities and aims to efficiently manage its defence investments to respond to evolving geopolitical challenges.
