Kiviberg: We are investigating whether there is support for the establishment of a commission to investigate police leaders
Ando Kiviberg announced the need to assess support for establishing a commission to investigate police leaders' compliance with the rule of law in ongoing criminal proceedings.
Ando Kiviberg, the chairman of the Constitutional Committee in Estonia, has raised the question of whether there is sufficient support to create a commission to investigate police leaders Elmar Vaheri, Eerik Heldna, and Aivar Alavere. The objective of this investigation would be to assess the legality of actions taken by the Security Police prior to ongoing criminal proceedings against these police leaders. Kiviberg emphasized the importance of determining support for the initiative before moving forward with the establishment of the commission.
Chairman of the Riigikogu, Lauri Hussar, confirmed to ERR that a proposal for a commission has been directed to the Constitutional Committee for discussion. However, the establishment of the commission has not yet been formally debated within the committee. Kiviberg expressed intent to consult with faction members regarding the commission's formation and to place the topic on the agenda for an upcoming session, although he noted that illness has delayed progress on the matter.
Kiviberg acknowledged the growing interest and intrigue surrounding the potential investigation, stating that while it is premature to provide detailed comments, the subject is important and worth pursuing. The creation of this commission could have significant implications for the public trust in law enforcement and accountability within Estonia's police leadership as ongoing criminal investigations continue to unfold.
