Measles Spreading Alarmingly Fast in the United States - Good News from Europe

Measles infections are rapidly increasing in the United States, with a report of over 700 cases in just the first six weeks of 2023.

Measles, a disease practically eradicated in Finland, is now spreading alarmingly in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the first six weeks of 2023 alone, there have been over 700 reported cases, a staggering increase compared to the total of about 2,300 cases throughout the entire year of 2025. This surge is particularly concerning given that the majority of infected individuals are children, with 85% of cases reported in those under 20 years old.

The rise in measles cases is largely attributed to vaccination gaps, with 95% of those infected either unvaccinated or with uncertain vaccination statuses. This alarming trend indicates that public health measures to increase vaccination rates are critically needed. Furthermore, a study published in Nature highlights a worrying decline in measles vaccination coverage among 5 to 6-year-olds, which has fallen by three percentage points over the past five years, facilitating the continued spread of the virus among young populations.

In contrast, Europe is reportedly experiencing better news regarding measles outbreaks, suggesting a disparity in vaccination efforts and public health responses between regions. As the situation evolves, public health officials in the U.S. are likely to ramp up their efforts to curb the outbreak and encourage vaccinations to prevent further incidences of this preventable disease.
