International Agreement to Rehabilitation of Deir Ali Power Station in Syria

An international funding agreement has been signed for the rehabilitation of the Deir Ali power station in Syria, aiming to enhance energy infrastructure and stability across several provinces.

The United Nations Development Programme announced the signing of a funding agreement with the governments of Italy and Norway worth $10.7 million for the rehabilitation of the Deir Ali power station located in rural Damascus. This initiative is intended to support energy infrastructure and improve the stability of power supplies in various Syrian provinces, as reported by the official Syrian news agency, SANA. The project involves urgent maintenance work for the second expansion of the power station, along with the supply and installation of crucial spare parts, and training for local technical staff to ensure operational sustainability and enhance future maintenance efficiency.

These restoration efforts are expected to contribute to the recovery of approximately 120 megawatts of generating capacity. This improvement will positively affect over two million people in the surrounding areas of rural Damascus, Daraa, Quneitra, and Sweida. The Deir Ali thermal power station, one of the largest electricity generation facilities in the country, has a total capacity of about 1,500 megawatts, making it a critical infrastructure for Syria’s energy needs.

The second expansion project began in 2011 and entered trial operation in 2019, adding approximately 700 megawatts to the power generation capacity. This agreement marks an important step not only for the recovery of energy supplies in Syria but also emphasizes the role of international cooperation in rebuilding the country’s war-damaged infrastructure.
