Iraq summoned the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad in response to remarks made by the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during a television interview.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has summoned the Turkish Ambassador in Baghdad, Anil Bora Inan, due to comments made by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in a televised interview, which Iraq found to be offensive. In a statement, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry's Deputy for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahrul Uloom, expressed dissatisfaction with the statements reported in the media. He emphasized that these remarks represent an insult to the friendly relations between Iraq and Turkey and are viewed as interference in Iraq's internal affairs, violating diplomatic norms.
Ambassador Bahrul Uloom also affirmed that Iraq is a constitutional democratic state and should not be compared to countries with differing political systems. He highlighted that matters related to Sinjar and all Iraqi regions are solely national issues that will be handled according to national priorities and mechanisms. The Iraqi government firmly rejected any foreign intervention aimed at imposing solutions or using these issues for political or military leverage.
In response, the Turkish ambassador clarified that the remarks by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had been misunderstood. This incident underscores ongoing tensions between Iraq and Turkey, especially regarding issues of sovereignty and the nuances of bilateral relations, emphasizing the fragile nature of diplomatic ties amidst regional controversies.
