Kross and Poolamets to Lead the Investigation Commission on Russian Influence
An Estonian parliamentary commission has appointed Kross and Poolamets to investigate Russian influence activities in the country.
The Estonian Parliament has formed a commission to investigate Russian influence operations, aiming to shed light on the methods of funding and associated risks. In its first meeting, the commission elected Eerik-Niiles Kross as chair and Anti Poolamets as deputy chair. The commission plans to establish a work plan and discuss its research methodology in order to analyze the impact of Russian influence on Estonian society.
Kross stated that the goal of the commission is to create a comprehensive overview of Russian influence operations, analyze their effects on society, and identify patterns and targets. Ultimately, the expected outcome is a report that enhances public awareness of the threats posed by hostile influence activities and proposes legislative measures and other protective mechanisms aimed at strengthening Estonia's defense capabilities and democracy.
The commission, composed of representatives from all parliamentary factions, was established at the end of January. This indicates a unified effort across Estonia's political landscape to confront external influence and protect national interests, highlighting the importance of vigilance against hybrid threats in the region, especially in light of increasing tensions with Russia.
