Lithuania Surpasses the US in This Field, Hungary Faces Worst Situation in the EU
Lithuania has improved its corruption perception ranking, now ahead of the US, while Hungary ranks last in the EU.
In the latest corruption perception index report, Lithuania ranked 28th globally, improving its score to 65 in comparison to the previous year. This places Lithuania just ahead of the United States, which holds the 29th position with a score of 64. The report highlights the progress made in the Baltic states in terms of anti-corruption efforts, with Estonia achieving the best ranking in Eastern and Central Europe at 12th place worldwide.
Hungary continues to struggle, landing last among EU countries and sharing this dubious distinction with Bulgaria. The report underscores an ongoing issue within Hungary's public sector regarding corruption, as it has remained at the bottom of the EU rankings for four consecutive years. Meanwhile, Lithuania's position shows a positive trend in governance and transparency, marking an improvement in the public's perception of corruption within its government.
The authors of the index noted a significant increase in the resilience of the Baltic states to corruption over the years, with Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia leading in the region. Latvia ranked 37th globally with a score of 60, demonstrating varying levels of success among the three Baltic nations. This upward trend reflects the broader implications for governance in the region and highlights the need for continued efforts to combat corruption in countries like Hungary and Bulgaria.
