'Illness which baffled doctors left me looking 9 months pregnant'
Katie Wells underwent surgery to remove a 26cm ovarian cyst after months of misdiagnosis, resulting in weight loss and relief from swelling.
Katie Wells, a 31-year-old from Burton-in-Kendal, faced months of misdiagnosis as her condition went from being treated as a simple chest infection to being diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Initially, she sought help for pain under her breast and experienced drastic abdominal swelling that left her looking nine months pregnant. Her GP's uncertainty about her elevated inflammatory markers led to further investigation when she was eventually referred to Lancaster Royal Infirmary.
It was only after extensive testing that doctors discovered an ovarian cyst measuring 26 centimeters, which contained eight litres of fluid. The delayed diagnosis had significant impacts on Katie's physical health and emotional well-being. Once the cyst was surgically removed, she experienced a rapid recovery and subsequently lost three stone, marking a significant change in her life and alleviating the discomfort she had been enduring.
Katie's story sheds light on the importance of persistent medical advocacy and highlights the challenges faced by patients when symptoms are overlooked or misattributed. Her experience serves as a broader reminder of the necessity for thorough diagnostic processes, especially in cases where initial treatment does not lead to improvement.
