Political Conservatism of Younger Generation Revealed by Takaiichi Fever; Japanese Government 'Highlights Security Document Revision'

A recent survey indicates that the younger generation in Japan is increasingly supportive of Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party following their electoral victory.

The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi, has achieved a significant electoral victory in recent elections, with survey results showing that positivity towards this outcome is particularly high among the younger generation. The trend towards conservatism in Japan's youth has been noted previously but has gained momentum with the emergence of phrases likening Takaiichi’s popularity to the idol fan culture in Japan. According to a recent national telephone survey conducted by the Yomiuri Shimbun, 55% of respondents endorsed the party's success, with that figure rising to an impressive 63% among those aged 18-39. This demographic observed a notable increase in support compared to older age groups.

In the recent House of Representatives election, the ruling party celebrated a historic win by securing 316 out of 465 seats, crossing a crucial two-thirds threshold. Awareness of Takaiichi's growing support among the youth has been evident even prior to the elections, with polls indicating a 77% support rate right after Takaiichi took office in October last year. In stark contrast, the support rates for previous leaders within the party tended to show weaker backing from the younger demographic. Shinzo Abe's tenure, which Takaiichi aims to carry on, experienced similarly elevated support from young voters since the LDP regained power in 2012.

The marked rise in young voter support for Takaiichi may also stem from her distinct communication style. Unlike her predecessors, who often engaged in nuanced and careful language, Takaiichi embraces a more direct approach, appealing to a generation craving straightforward and assertive rhetoric. This shift could be contributing to the marked difference in young voters' affinity for her leadership, as they gravitate towards the promise of a ‘strong Japan’ that she ardently advocates. As Japan's socio-political landscape continues to evolve, this growing conservative sentiment among the youth could have lasting implications for the country’s future political dynamics and policies.
