A coastal protection dam is being formed in the Curonian Spit: it will stop the flow of salty water
A coastal protection dam project at the Curonian Spit aims to reduce coastal erosion and protect the sensitive ecosystem of the Curonian Lagoon.
The project for a coastal protection dam in the highly sensitive and protected area of the Curonian Spit has taken significant steps forward, with the winning contractor selected. The Klaipėda port authority announced that the engineering company ‘Sweco Lietuva’ has won the contract for the project, signaling a commitment to protecting this valuable national heritage site. The dam is expected to mitigate coastal erosion and lower the risks of detrimental changes in the Curonian Lagoon ecosystem.
The general director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, Algis Latakas, emphasized the importance of respecting the unique environment surrounding the port and taking actions that contribute to its preservation. The dam is designed to prevent the encroachment of salty water, thereby maintaining the integrity of both the shoreline and the local ecology. This initiative represents a proactive approach to safeguarding the region and upholding environmental responsibility.
‘Sweco Lietuva’ is tasked with completing the project proposals, technical designs, and construction supervision over the next nearly two years. This initiative underscores a broader strategy aimed at ensuring stability and opportunities for the future by reinforcing infrastructure while responding to environmental challenges. The successful execution of this project could set a precedent for similar initiatives in other vulnerable coastal regions.
