I want people in the Czech Republic to be proud of me, said Souček after the record. However, the result was hard to swallow
West Ham footballer Tomáš Souček has become the highest Czech scorer in the history of the English Premier League, although he was disappointed by his team's draw against Manchester United.
Tomáš Souček, a 30-year-old midfielder for West Ham and a member of the Czech national team, has proudly claimed the title of the highest-scoring Czech player in English league history with his 39th goal in the Premier League. This milestone was achieved by surpassing Patrik Berger's previous record. However, despite the personal achievement, the player expressed disappointment because West Ham's game against Manchester United ended in a 1-1 draw after they conceded a late equalizer in the sixth minute of injury time.
This season, Souček scored his third goal in the league and remarked that he had last scored on November 8. He emphasized the significance of this record to him, stating, 'I am proud to have broken this record because I have always cared about where I come from. I am from the Czech Republic and I want people there to be proud of me.' Achieving the landmark goal took him 217 matches, which is eight fewer than it took Berger to score 38 goals.
Souček has been with West Ham since January 2020 and had his most prolific scoring season soon after joining, netting ten goals in a single Premier League campaign. He appreciates the legacy of Berger, whom he admires, and feels grateful for the opportunity to contribute significantly to Czech football, thus inspiring pride in his homeland.
