The Latvian government has decided to submit all information related to the forestry industry case to the Prosecutor General's Office for further investigation after an internal review was discussed in a closed meeting.
In Latvia, the government's cabinet discussed the results of an internal review concerning the support for the forestry industry during a closed part of their meeting, as sensitive information was involved. Both the Attorney General and the State Auditor were invited to provide insights since they are conducting a broader investigation into the matter. State Auditor Edgars Korčagins indicated that the audit is nearing completion and a report is expected to be released in April.
Korčagins emphasized the importance of understanding the decisions that led to the price reductions in the forestry sector, as well as identifying the responsibility of the cabinet, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the companies involved. When questioned about who is to be held accountable, Korčagins stated that this would be an open question in the audit report, avoiding any conclusive answers about the misappropriation of funds at this stage.
In light of the ongoing investigation, the government has chosen not to pursue any further answers from politicians on the issue but instead decided to hand over all materials related to the forestry case to the Prosecutor General's Office. This move signifies a serious approach to accountability and transparency in the matter, reflecting the government's commitment to addressing potential malpractices within the forestry sector.
