Does the government have a Plan B regarding Ziobro? Żurek: There is an atomic option
Polish Minister Żurek discusses the situation of former Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, emphasizing that his asylum in Hungary does not grant him impunity and outlines potential paths for his return to Poland for legal proceedings.
In a recent statement, Polish Minister Żurek commented on the controversial figure of Zbigniew Ziobro, who is currently seeking asylum in Hungary. Żurek emphasized that Ziobro's presence there does not confer total immunity from the law, referring to Hungary as a nation that is close to Putin and a disruptor within the European Union. He stressed that the situation is precarious and likened Ziobro's current status to being trapped in a 'golden cage'.
When asked about the strategies for bringing Ziobro back to Poland to face justice, Żurek outlined two primary options. First, he mentioned the potential for political change in Hungary, suggesting that upcoming elections could result in a more favorable environment for addressing Ziobro’s legal issues, as opposition leaders have stated publicly that Hungary will not protect criminals. This political shift could open up avenues for legal action against Ziobro.
The second option involves engaging the European Union to address the matter of Ziobro’s asylum. Żurek revealed that he recently engaged in discussions with EU politicians in Brussels, where Ziobro’s situation is a point of significant concern. He indicated that these discussions revolve around whether Hungary's actions are consistent with European laws, suggesting that the EU could potentially take steps to address what they perceive as Hungary's shortcomings in upholding the rule of law.
