Lithuanian police investigate the death of an Estonian citizen: car intact, man found dead on the roadside

Lithuanian authorities are investigating the death of an Estonian citizen found dead beside a road, with suspicions of being struck by a passing vehicle.

In the early hours of Monday, an Estonian citizen was found dead near the 54th kilometer of the Kaunas-Marijampolė-Suwałki highway in Lithuania. The Lithuanian rescue service responded to an automatic notification of a traffic incident that appeared to come from the deceased's phone. Upon arrival, they discovered an idling Peugeot 3008, which was unharmed, next to the body of a man who was later pronounced dead by paramedics. Identification documents confirmed he was a 39-year-old citizen from Estonia.

Reports suggest that the victim may have been struck by a vehicle after exiting his car. An investigation led by the Marijampolė regional police was initiated following the incident. According to a spokesperson, Joana Zubrickė, a Polish citizen was suspected of driving the truck that allegedly struck the man and was subsequently detained by Polish police. This incident has raised concerns about road safety and is being thoroughly investigated.

The context is particularly sensitive given the cross-border implications, as it involves citizens of two countries and raises questions about road safety standards and enforcement. The investigation is still ongoing, as authorities from both countries may collaborate to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic event. As the investigation unfolds, it might also draw attention to the treatment and safety of road incidents involving foreign nationals in Lithuania and the measures taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
