Kenya has successfully rescued 27 citizens who were illegally recruited to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war and repatriated them home.
The Kenyan government, through its diplomatic mission in Moscow, has successfully rescued and repatriated 27 citizens who were stranded in Russia after being illegally recruited for the Russia-Ukraine war. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced that these individuals had been deceived by networks associated with the Russian military, who promised them jobs that ultimately involved frontline combat. This recruitment has raised significant concerns regarding the safety and awareness of Kenyans abroad, particularly in conflict zones.
Upon their return, some of the repatriated individuals reported serious injuries and expressed their distress over having been compelled to undertake perilous tasks, such as drone assembly, without any training or safety measures. Mudavadi emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the exploitative recruitment practices and indicated plans to visit Moscow to mitigate the risk of further illegal recruitment efforts targeting Kenyans. The Kenyan government is also focused on providing psychosocial support and assistance for the reintegration of these returnees into society, emphasizing the need for their recovery.
