Ambassador Pildegovičs: Russia is an aggressive and unreliable neighbor
Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine, Andrejs Pildegovičs, emphasizes the need for awareness regarding Russia's aggressive behavior, while also advising against panic over potential invasion scenarios.
In an interview with LETA, Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine Andrejs Pildegovičs addressed concerns regarding Russia's military posture and actions towards neighboring countries. He stated that, while the Baltic states should not panic over the possibility of a Russian invasion, it is essential to recognize that they are in close proximity to an aggressive and unreliable neighbor. Pildegovičs cited the ongoing militarization of Russia as a significant concern, along with threats to national borders and sovereignty.
The ambassador referred to comments made by Kirilo Budanovs, head of the Ukrainian president's administration, who previously led the Main Intelligence Directorate and suggested that Russia is preparing for potential invasions of the Baltic states. Pildegovičs underscored the seriousness of Budanov's warnings and advocated for preparedness in the face of potential crises. He noted recent incidents involving Russian drone attacks across various European countries and damaged cables in the Baltic Sea.
However, Pildegovičs also cautioned against perceiving these threats as inevitable or unavoidable, suggesting that Budanov’s statements were directed towards European leaders as a reminder of the escalating risks posed by Russia, particularly in the event of a Ukrainian defeat. The embassy's perspective highlights the importance of vigilance and solidarity among European nations in facing these geopolitical challenges posed by Russia's actions in the region.
